Snorkel reef expansion project has begun in Navarre

The Navarre Beach snorkel reef expansion project first phase of the project is now underway. This will expand the existing Navarre Beach reef about 100 yards offshore, increasing it from 30 reef units to 90 reef units. Funding is through a Natural Resource Damage Assessment grant . Total cost is $210,900.

Reef units are man made structures that create the underwater habitat that will attract different fish and sea turtles. The reef pods are constructed with an 8- to 12-foot diameter that will be driven about 15 feet into the sand. The exposed part ( still underwater ) is a 5-foot concrete disc containing limestone rock.
